Vusamazulu Credo Mutwa was born around 1921 (the exact date is unknown) in Natal, the illegitimate son of Allan Mutwa. On his mother's side he is a direct descendant of an unbroken line of Zulu witchdoctors and, by hereditary right, was appointed in his youth attendant to his grandfather, the High Witchdoctor of the Zulus whose father before him (Credo's great grandfather) was the personal High Witchdoctor to the Zulu king, Dingaan. In 1963, on the death of his grand-father, Mutwa was officially proclaimed his successor as High Witchdoctor;
