Occult Powers In Nature And In Man

"Occult powers" refer to hidden, mystical, or supernatural phenomena and latent human abilities. In the context of the occultist and theosophist Geoffrey Hodson's classic book, Occult Powers in Nature and in Man, these include extrasensory perception (ESP), psychokinesis, and the inherent, unseen spiritual laws governing both the cosmos and human consciousness.

The concept explores the belief that both the natural world and the human spirit possess profound, invisible properties waiting to be unlocked.

The Hidden Powers of Man

Occult traditions posit that the human mind and soul harbor extraordinary capabilities that transcend standard physical limitations. These latent powers are often categorized as follows:

Extrasensory Perception (ESP): Abilities like clairvoyance (seeing distant or hidden objects), clairaudience (hearing beyond normal frequency ranges), and precognition (foreseeing future events).  Psychometry: The alleged ability to glean secret or historical information about an object or person merely by touching them. Telepathy: The capability to send and receive thoughts or messages without physical interaction. Astral Projection: The practice of separating one's consciousness or subtle energy body from the physical shell to explore hidden realms. Intuition: Viewed not just as a gut feeling, but as a recessive yet powerful feature of human agency that connects individuals directly to universal truth.

Hidden Forces in Nature

Beyond the human body, the occult perspective argues that the natural world is animated by invisible laws, spiritual energies, and consciousness. 

Natural Magic & Alchemy: The belief that one can interact with and manipulate the hidden forces behind natural phenomena and physical substances.  Astrology & Divination: The ancient idea that celestial bodies (the sun, moon, and planets) exert energetic, occult influences on earthly life and human destiny.  Vitalism: The concept that a hidden, universal life force (often called prana or chi) permeates all living organisms, guiding biological processes, healing, and spiritual evolution.

MR GEOFFREY HODSON was born and educated in England. He served with distinction in the British Army during the first World War. A deep student of the Ancient Wisdom and 'religious' in the highest sense of the term, he laboured ceaselessly for the

spiritual regeneration of mankind till his death in January 1983 at the age of 96.

Throughout his seventy years of membership of the Theosophical Society he was active lecturing for the Society in America, England, Europe, South Africa, India, New Zealand, Australia and the Far East.

Mr Geoffrey Hodson was the author of some forty theosophical and other books based on occult investigations conducted by him through his clairvoyant powers.

He was awarded the Subba Rao Medal in 1954 for his contributions to theosophical literature.

Mr Hodson was Director of Studies of the School of the Wisdom at the International Headquarters of the Theosophical Society at Adyar in India four times and a Guest Lecturer at the Krotona School of Theosophy in California.
